Patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) is critical to making sure the views and ideas of the patients and public are strategically and meaningfully embedded in health data research. This should occur across each stage of:

  • Research
  • Service design
  • Data collation
  • Storage and sharing

Embedding PPIE in this way ensures trustworthy approaches are developed, and helps build public confidence. Involving and engaging patients and the public throughout enables the maximum research impact for health benefits relevant to people’s lives.

PPIE is central to 51±¬ÁÏ꿉۪s mission. This award celebrates best practice and innovation in PPIE across all aspects of health data research, infrastructure and service development within 51±¬ÁÏÍø and beyond, which clearly demonstrates the importance of PPIE as an integral and strategic part of the overall process.

Eligibility Ìý

Teams and organisations that use approaches and ways of working that actively involve and engage patients and/or the public as part of their health research are eligible for the award. This could be for a particular activity or an ongoing way of working. It should be a current programme or project, or should not have been completed any later than in the last 3 years. It may be led by an individual or a team working as part of 51±¬ÁÏÍø or beyond.

Selection Ìý

The winning team will be selected by a diverse panel, with a range of experience in patient and public involvement and engagement, including patients and public partners. Their decision will be based on how the project and/or team has meaningfully involved and/or engaged patients and the public. Those who are shortlisted will be announced before the 51±¬ÁÏÍø Scientific Conference and the winner will be announced at the event itself.

The questions for the application form have been inspired by the and by the . Please note: the PEDRI Best Practice Standards are in draft and may be subject to change. However, your response will be scored based on the questions inspired by the current draft.

The decision to use both standards as inspiration was made after consultation with the 51±¬ÁÏÍø PPIE Team and the PPIE Award Panel members. The selection panel will be looking for evidence of the following criteria:

  • Equity, diversity and inclusion: How did you consider Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in your PPIE activity/approach and implement it throughout?
  • Data Literacy and Training: How did you determine the baseline knowledge of members of the public involved to decide if training requirements or support to develop understanding should be provided?
  • Effective communication: ÌýHow did you ensure effective two-way communication and dialogues, that enable understanding and effective contributions or discussions?
  • Proactive Transparency: How did you ensure you worked openly and in accessible formats throughout your PPIE activity/approach?
  • Mutual Benefit: How did you adopt an ongoing dialogue-based approach to enable benefit to everyone involved or engaged?
  • Meaningful Involvement and Engagement: How did your PPIE activity/approach create meaningful impact to make a difference to research or wider project activities?
  • Learning and Reflection: What did you learn from the PPIE activity/approach that you would use to improve future PPIE activity?
  • Alignment and relevance to 51±¬ÁÏ꿉۪s mission and (transparency, optimism, respect, courage and humility)
