Population Research UK
Between January-November 2021 we scoped development of a new initiative called Population Research UK, which aims increase the insights, innovations and research efficiency of the UK’s wealth of social and biomedical longitudinal population studies.
Population Research UK is aÌý±è°ù´Ç±è´Ç²õ±ð»åÌýinitiative by ,  a²Ô»å Ìýthat was scopedÌýon their behalf by Health Data Research UK (51±¬ÁÏÍø).ÌýBuilding on knowledge developed through theÌýHubs programmeÌýwe worked with the wider community to design how to maximise the use, innovation and benefit from the UK’s wealth of social and biomedical longitudinal population studies (LPS) – cohorts, panel studies and record-linkage studies that all collect information from large numbers of individuals over time.
ScopingÌýprogrammeÌý
Key was consideringÌýa proposal that putÌýuser needs at the centre ofÌýPRUKÌýspecificationÌýhow a newÌýinitiativeÌýcould work alongside andÌýcollaborativelyÌýwithÌýthe existing research initiatives and infrastructures that support and deliverÌýlongitudinal populationÌýresearch. Over 350 individual pieces of feedback were collected in the form of online surveys,ÌýinterviewsÌýand small groups discussions.ÌýInput from the public was woven in at all stages.ÌýThe work was supported by a PartnershipÌýGroupÌýcomposed of invited representativesÌýthat metÌýregularly to make recommendations and active feedback from the wider community throughoutÌýscopingÌýphase.Ìý

Next stepsÌý
The next steps are forÌýthe ESRC, MRC and WellcomeÌýto consider the prospectus and decide on aÌýcommissioning model based on the recommendations, and whether any further preparatory work needs to be undertaken to ensure the data infrastructure landscape is in the best position for any future investments to be a success and add value.ÌýÌý
Following this, identification of a multidisciplinary and diverse leadership team might follow, with the capabilities to motivate and coordinate across a diverse set of stakeholders and the operational decisiveness to deliver long-standing benefit envisioned.ÌýÌý
