With a career spanning finance, neuroscience and international health data initiatives, Melissa brings a unique blend of scientific expertise and strategic thinking to the role. We spoke to Melissa about her unconventional career path, what drives their work, and what excites them most about working for Health Data Research UK.

Career journey

Melissa’s route into health data was far from conventional. She began her career in finance and investments, but a conversation with a friend prompted her to reflect on the impact she wanted her work to have. “They said to me, ‘You’re exactly where you’ve worked your entire life to be’ and it made me stop and think about what I was contributing to the world.”

That reflection led Melissa back to university, where she studied the epigenetics of foetal brain development in autism spectrum disorders. Encouraged by a mentor to consider what unique perspective they could bring to science, she realised the answer was in combining her scientific and business backgrounds – a combination that ultimately led to product leadership in health data.

Experience and expertise

Before joining Health Data Research UK (51±¬ÁÏÍø), Melissa worked at the (GA4GH) and the , helping to coordinate technical and strategic work across international genomics and data infrastructure initiatives.

These roles involved bringing together diverse stakeholder groups, translating requirements across multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring technological solutions aligned with international standards.

For Melissa, “connecting with the global health data community helps strengthen UK research and accelerate the translation of discoveries into real-world, clinical benefits for our citizens and patients.”

"The 51±¬ÁÏÍø Tech Team is full of brilliant, passionate and motivated people. I'm honoured to support the teams working on the Gateway in any way I can."

Why 51±¬ÁÏÍø?

While previous roles offered opportunities to contribute at a global and European scale, it was the opportunity for deeper impact that attracted Melissa to 51±¬ÁÏÍø. “What I value about working at 51±¬ÁÏÍø is the depth of impact. We get to work directly with data custodians and researchers to solve some of their biggest data discovery and access challenges. Then we get to see the results of that work reflected back through products like the Gateway.”

We asked Melissa what gives her the greatest sense of satisfaction at work, and the answer came quickly: the people. “The 51±¬ÁÏÍø Technology Team is full of brilliant, passionate and motivated people. I’m genuinely inspired by the quality of work they produce, and I’m honoured to support the teams working on the Gateway in any way I can.”

A piece of advice

Looking back on a career that has taken her from finance to neuroscience and then into health data infrastructure, Melissa has some simple advice for others considering a similar path: “Go with the flow and see what life offers you. Going from finance to neuroscience to data infrastructure was never the plan, but I don’t regret picking up the threads I found along the way.”
